I just completed my second Half Ironman and hit my target of Sub 6 hours. Currently training for a Half Marathon (everything in halves) and then a tougher Half Ironman in December. I am wasting a lot of energy on these races carrying excess fat around the course. I know I would be faster if I was lighter. I have lost about 20lbs in last two years but still have maybe another 10 that could go.

Thanks!
Hope all is going well.
Mid pack is a good goal to have - it's mine as well :)
Well done on the weight loss this week! :)
Tim .... I've sent a begging email to HDO asking for them to let me off the postage (which is $40 in itself). Nothing back yet :( I'll keep you informed
My endurance has always been good but my speed has always been very slow. I'm going to start working on that. I want to be mid-pack in the triathlon in October. That's my goal!
Thanks for the comments on the triathlon and my weight loss. I'm serious about the invite if the airfare isn't too much. It's just a van ride from Bangkok and I think Air New Zealand flies direct.
How cool that you're doing the 1/2 Ironmans! That would certainly be a goal for me in a year or two.
Blessings - William
Hey, don't beat yourself up about your weight this week!
Take Care!
Just be careful you don't overdo it ... speed is great when it comes along but his twin brother injury is never lurking too far behind.
Be careful and run long! ... and fast obviously :)
Mike
It felt good to go running this morning... even though I almost didn't! And I set out for a easy slow run, and I must just be getting faster because I ran the 10k in 59 min without even trying - how bout that? Just braggin now.
Hope you get back to your training soon.
I don't have any structure to my training at the mo .... I am someone that needs a plan. The kids are doing triathlon in 4 weeks time so its been fun 'training' with them. 10 minute bike rides and 3 minute runs have been 'different' :) Adam did it last year but it's Laura's first. Really looking forward to it.
I'm in a good place with my eating at the moment and if i can get back in training I will see the weight loss increase ... well that's the plan anyway! :)
Once I get it on 'paper' and commit it to blogland it will happen! .... again that's the plan. I want to target a Sub2 Half marathon and Sub3 90k bike in there somewhere plus the Half Ironman in December. Exciting times! :)
Keep on running and blogging
Mike
Thanks for all your support
Mike
Good luck!!
Hopefully over the next few months I can get myself a bike and start training for a sprint tri. I would like to do one before the end of 2008..... we will see!
Its been a funny 'ol week
Coming back from calf injury AGAIN! .... which has been slow BUT been great in that I have been able to run with Adam and Laura. They go at exactly my recovery pace so been stopping me going tooo fast. Sure I can get the speed back later. Went 2.5 miles with Adam on Monday, same on Tuesday but with Laura as well and then 3 miles on my own on Wednesday. Me and Adam are going for a 3 mile run tonight (Thursday) and then maybe a slightly longer one on Friday.
Been swimming with wetsuit in work pool which has been great. Really working on technique. I can cover 25m in 15 strokes now .... when I started last year it was 27. Probably about the same speed but I reckon the energy used to get to the other side of the pool has halved since last year. Swam 2k in the pool today in 40 mins 25 seconds .... which I need to improve on because I want sub 40 for 2k in ironman BUT important thing is that I didn't feel tired at all. It was just a relaxing swim ... should be able to ride faster after the swim in January ... and then hopefully run faster.
Riding bike has been good ... although had puncture on Sunday. All good now. Took me 25mins to change though. That is not good. need to halve that if it happens on the day. Imagine! I will pray to the puncture fairy before the race and hopefully all will be OK.
Planning on long ride this Sunday. Will try the first loop - 55k
Signed up for Half Ironman so it's official now - no going back! :)
Thanks for your continued support and motivation
Mike
p.s. sorry its so long .....
Congrats! I read through your blog entry from yesterday, sounds like a very enjoyable time. Congratulations on finishing within your goal time. I am looking soooo forward myself to racing - I have a very long time before a marathon, but am looking very forward to the journey. I just got to get past this hurt foot - it is really discouraging me right now. I have my first 5k in just two weeks and really needed this last couple weeks to get ready :(
Anyway - great job! So your next goal is an Ironman? Good luck, and good training to you - I as sure you will meet your goal - you sound like you have the drive.

Marathon is only 4 days away. Just 2 runs of 6k each to go and then its the big one. I'll let you know how I get on.
Just had a look at your progress. Impressive weight loss so far. Keep going!
Good luck with your running. It looks like you are being consistant with the treadmill running. If you can keep this up and increase the duration slowly (no more than 10% each week) you'll have a great 10k race.
Good luck
Mike
Good to see your progress. I noticed the last post said you were going to run your marathon in a week. How did you do? I envy people like you :) I am still early in my running.
Tim
1 week to go to marathon. Can't wait! Feeling positive ... if a little scared about the hills and erm yeah the distance!
Thanks for all your support as motivators
Mike
This time last year I was 97kg .... down to 88.2kg this morning!!! ... well pleased!!! :)))
7:00am Running ( 30k - 3:26:29 - 15k out 1:44:00 - 15k back 1:42:29 )
Time
3h:26m:29s
Distance
30.0km
(18.6miles)
Speed
8.7km/h
(5.4mph)
Description
Long Run - 30k
I did it!
I was slow and one paced but I did it. My watch broke on the way round but who cares. A 30k run under my belt and it felt good. Legs held out better than the previous 26k run. Felt great to get to the Mount beach and run along the boardwalk. ... and then run home :)
Left knee hurt on and off but nothing serious. Funny though when I got back my right knee started to lock up on the outside. Got ice on it now.
Had energy drinks hidden on the course which worked really well. Hardest thing was bending down to pick up the last one just before the harbour bridge on the way home.
Felt good when I finished and even had a half k sprint home. Definitely could have gone a few more k. Question is do I do the same run next week with a run around the Mount as well or just add some k along the boardwalk. mmmm not sure yet. Be good to test myself with the Mount run but I'll see how I feel tomorrow ... and later in the week.
Got negative split again which is fantastic
15k out 1:44:00
15k back 1:42:29
Very pleased with these figures - averages at 6:53 min ks which is slooooow but OK. Think I could keep that up for another 10 or so k
42.2k at this pace would be 4:50:30. With a decent taper reckon this could go down to 4:45 or the taper will take care of the hill factor that I haven't really tackled.
On the whole very proud of my achievement. Tauranga and the Mount looked especially beautiful this morning and I felt honoured to be able to run in such a beautiful place. Well good!
On target for sub 5 hour marathon
Thanks for being my motivators
Mike
p.s thanks to Jo, Adam and Laura for coming out the other night in the car to rescue me on my long run .... even though I still had 2 minues to get home to beat my 8pm curfew deadline :) I promise to take my phone on all future runs!
Hope you've had a great week
Mike
I will run faster if I am 10kg lighter - Target is below 4:30 for the marathon
